Gloria Perez to run for HD-33???

UPDATE: Gloria is not running. I just got off the phone with Gloria and she said, "I am totally flattered and overwhelmed but this is not the right time for me to run. I am very grateful and thankful to all who considered me as a possible candidate."

Much ado has been raised about prospective candidates for the soon to be vacated seat (HD-33). On everyone’s short list is the son of the local congressman and a high school principle who was just reassigned for still unknown reasons.

A new name has risen up from all the speculation. The possible candidate’s name is Gloria Perez. I met Gloria around the campaign trail in Corpus Christi and I instantly liked her. It may be because she was volunteering but as I discovered more about her, the more I was impressed.

A little about Gloria: G_perez_1

A quick evaluation of her life shows that she is testament the American dream that hard work can overcome obstacles and lead to a successful life professionally and personally. Gloria, now in her early 50s, was a young mother when she had her first child.

“Perez became a single parent at age 18. As my friends were going off to school, I didn’t have that option,” she says. “I wasn’t going to have my parents help me because I felt I needed to accept my responsibility. I was going to take care of my daughter myself so I needed to go to work.” Southwestern Bell gave Perez the portal she needed to begin a successful 29-year career with the company.”

Perez also relocated several times across Texas to climb the corporate ladder, including moves to San Antonio, McAllen, Harlingen, Laredo and Corpus Christi. “I had to move every time I was asked because it was the only way I could advance. But, there were sacrifice”

Since retiring from the telecommunications industry two years ago, Perez has put her energy full-time into her own three businesses, which fall under Asiel Enterprises, Inc. She’s also looking at a fourth business–a partnership that would offer small business owners discounted corporate services under one umbrella, including payroll, insurance, safety, job training, tax preparation and other services that many small businesses can’t handle or sometimes can’t afford.

She has led a life of example. She is a Latina woman done well for herself and her family. I want a representative that understands the value of hard work and knows the difficulties of trying to raise a family and be a professional.

Here is short list of her accomplishments:

•    League of United Latin American Citizens Council #1 named her an Outstanding Community Leader,
•    Recipient of the Service to the Community Award
•    Minority Business Development Center presented her with a Subcontractor Award.
•    Serves on the Del Mar College Foundation, Inc.,
•    Board member of Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation
•    Board member of the United Way of the Coastal Bend
•    Board member of KEDT (local public television station)
•    Vice Chair for Economic Development for the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce in Austin.
•    Past Chair of the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
•    Participated in Leadership San Antonio
•   Volunteered with the American Heart Association, Juvenile Diabetes Association, Forward Corpus Christi and the Art Museum of South Texas.
•    Receive the endorsement of the Caller Times when she ran for City Council (she lost by a very slim margin.

I’m impressed. How about you?

So, what does Solomon Ortiz Jr. have to offer? I’m sure he is a nice enough guy but that and $1.50 will buy you a cup of coffee.

What real world experience does Junior have? Has he raised a family? Has he met a payroll? Has he served his country? Has he held a job that anyone is aware of? In fact, what does he do for a living? I’ve asked everybody and no one knows. Someone please tell me because as far as I can see is that the only thing he has going for him is the fortune of being born a Congressman’s son. Frankly, the accident of birth is not enough. You have to earn your seat at the table.

Gloria Perez has the kind of real world experience that will make her a valuable asset for Corpus Christi.

I am hearing there are a lot of folks that are asking her to run since she is most qualified candidate in that community. As soon I confirm that she is running, I will let everyone know.

Please ask Gloria's position on the beach access issue.

when will she sit down and talk to us?

Also, please ask her views of (1) NAFTA, (2) the Kyoto protocols, (3) the Senate and House immigration proposals, (4) the minimum wage, (5) tort reform, and (6) which, if any, Republicans she has supported.
